Did you know that the Billings Adult Education Program also offers hobby classes? And with so many different courses offered you are almost virtually guaranteed to find something of interested to you. One such course we’ll highlight today is fly fishing.
Fly fishing is a terrific sport, and one that most anyone can perform. It’s challenging, but only as challenging as you want it to be. With the most basic knowledge of the intricacies of the sport, you can have success in fly fishing. And that’s what the course intends to do: one day of intensive study of the practices and etiquette’s needed to have success on the water.
Although fly casting looks difficult, in even a short time of work with an experienced instructor, you will pick up on its nuances; likely you won’t be able to cast a fly perfectly in one session, but you will understand the how-to’s of fly casting, and you will be able to take what you’ve learned, in the course, to evolve your skill in further independent practice. Also a basic understanding of the knots needed to attach flies, leaders, leader material. And, like fly-casting, you won’t be an expert at knot tying that first day, but you will be given the answers to how to tie the knots, and also which knots are best used in which circumstances.
The most challenging aspects of fly fishing is the reading of water, understanding the fish, and understanding how fish respond to flies. There is no one class that will teach you all of this in one day, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to water and fish. But, this class can teach you the basics, the ways of looking at a river. You will learn the areas on the river that tend to be places where fish congregate; you will learn how to break down the river’s entirety into smaller chunks, manageable areas to concentrate your fishing efforts.
This course is designed to introduce you to the sport of fly fishing. You don’t need your own equipment, although if you have it your encouraged to bring it to class.
